Target countries for Work & Travel

Zielländer für Work & Travel-Aufenthalte In most countries, Work & Travel participants require a working holiday visa.

Germany has signed treaties on work and travel with various countries. Backpackers may travel to:

Australia
New Zealand
Canada
Japan
South Korea
Hong Kong

on work and travel visas. People from these countries may also travel to Germany and work here while touring around.

The visa permits the holder to stay in the host country for a given period. The period of stay is generally 12 months. Conditions for obtaining the visa may vary and depend on the requirements of the country. Often countries require evidence of:

Financial collateral

A vaccination record

A certificate of good conduct

US Immigration requires a J1 visa. This visa entitles incoming travelers to undertake casual work in the US, but is not intended to facilitate permanent immigration. Backpackers must apply for the visa at the US Embassy. The visa may take up to six weeks to be issued. To obtain an entry permit, participants must submit confirmation of a job offer when applying for the visa.

Anyone wanting to do casual work and travel in Singapore requires a Work Holiday Pass. The pass is similar to the working holiday visa, but is only valid for six months. Backpackers may only join this program if they are in possession of a letter of acceptance to study at a German university or college. Those who do not meet this criterion may only enter on a normal tourist visa.

No special visa is required for Work & Travel stays in European Union countries. Very popular destinations are

England

France

Ireland

Also for other countries that are not members of the EU, no further visa is required for joining the Work & Travel program. This applies, for example, to

Norway and

Iceland.

Here, EU nationals may enter the country without further permission and take up casual employment.
